We integrate social comparison theory into stakeholder research and theorize how firms’ relative treatments of employees and increase in external labor market mobility (i.e., reduction in labor market friction) affect employees’ whistleblowing behaviors. A higher compensation disparity between a CEO and employees and a higher treatment disparity between other external stakeholders and employee treatment will decrease employees’ loyalty, leading to more whistleblowing. We use a multi-method approach to test these predictions. In study 1, we rely on a sample of establishment-level data on employee whistleblowing of U.S. publicly listed firms to test the influence of treatment disparities on whistleblowing. In study 2, with two experiments, we further demonstrate causality and examine employee loyalty as the explanatory mediating mechanism for the effects found in study 1.
主讲人介绍:
钱翠丽教授毕业于香港科技大学,任美国UT-Dallas大学管理学教授。她的研究兴趣包括利益相关者管理、转型经济体的公司治理和政治战略,以及跨国公司在国际商务中的控制和人员配置问题。她在Academy of Management Journal等顶级学术期刊上发表过多篇论文,现任Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Management Journal, Administrative Science Quarterly和Journal of Management编委。
